"A true story from commercial aviation....
In connection with the introduction of the Airbus A340, Scandinavian Airlines decided to produce a Safety Awareness video presentation of the aircraft for the ramp personel.
A new aircraft always creates new safety problems, so the request was quite natural. The only thing was, that the video should be finished prior to the arrival of the first A340. So how could we video record on an aircraft that hadn't arrived yet.
As a solution we chose to 3D animate the aircraft in true coloring and use this 3D model to get around and into those areas of the aircraft which were most critical safety wise. Then we would dissolve into close ups (real videofootage for the details) shot at another airline. These were made close in angles so the identity was not revealed.
Since we haven't tried this kind of production before, we were very anxious to see the final video product.
The result was above expectation. Sometimes we even forgot ourselves, when the dissolve went from video to the 3D model and visa versa. The 3D model enabled us to move around very quickly from one location to the other, and in the animation the camera angle was optimized to match the true video shot.
The 3D model enabled us to deliver very spectacular camera angles and elegant transitions. The 3D model also enabled us to finish the video production prior to delivery of the first Airbus A340.
Success always breads success, so later the same year we repeated the concept for the introduction of our A321. Once again with a result above expectations.
Now just guess who provided us with these superb 3D animations?"
